Safety tips when you are waiting for tow truck service

Driving is an important day to day activity for many of us. Without a good vehicle to use, it can be difficult to go from one place to the other, but it is sometimes unavoidable to experience a vehicular problem along the way. No matter how careful you are in maintaining your vehicle, there is always a time that you need to call a towing service to fix a faulty engine, change a flat tire, or open a locked car. This kind of situation is very stressful especially if you have an appointment to catch up or you are travelling with your children. However, it is important to keep in mind that safety should be prioritized while waiting for the towing company to arrive. Cars, trucks and other types of vehicles that pass through the road where you park can impose a threat. So to make sure that you, your vehicle and your passengers are safe, follow these simple tips.

Park your car in a safer area

The first thing to do when you are in a situation where you need to contact a towing service is to park your vehicle safely. No matter where you are, it is important to secure your safety in order to avoid untoward accidents while on the road. Every now and then, vehicles at different sizes pass by any streets, so to avoid a collision, make sure that your car is placed in an area where it is visible with fellow drivers. Switch your hazard lights or use flares or cones to signal the incoming vehicles.

Get away from traffic

The moment your car engine stop working, turn on your hazard lights and pull over to a safer area. Do your best to get out from traffic so you do not block other vehicles from passing by.

Stay inside the vehicle

Unless you happen to be stranded in the parking lot of a coffee shop, inside your car is generally the safest location to wait. Your car will keep you relatively well protected from both the weather and passing vehicles. If you are stranded in a busy highway, do not attempt to get out from the vehicle. Turn on the hazard lights and make sure to exit carefully when it is completely safe. If you have your family with you, keep the door locks closed so no one gets out while waiting for the towing service provider.

Gather any personal belongings that you have in the car

Including insurance papers that you will need after your car is towed (particularly if it will need repairs).

In winter time

Keep the windows and doors of the vehicle closed to keep in the warmth as much as possible. Always travel with an emergency kit that includes warm clothes, blankets, hand warmers, food and water. Remember that during a bad winter storm, you may have to wait a longer time before the towing company arrives.
